Sister M. Julian was born Maureen Agnes McKenna on the 11th May 1919. She worked for three years to support her mother in raising her three other siblings, before entering religious life in Pennant Hills in 1938, where she became Sister M. Julian. It was here that she began her journey as a nun for the Good Samaritan Sisters, which would lead her outside of Australia. In time, she would become one of the six Sisters from her organisation to go to Japan in 1948.
In 1953, Seiwa Joshi Gakuin was founded in Sasebo, where Sister Julian would taught English and Music. In Nara, she attained the position of Director of Novices within the Catholic Church. This meant that she was responsible for the training and governing of the noviciates within the institute, or those in preparation to be vowed into a religious life. Sister M. Julian returned to Australia in 1994, marking the end of her 46 years of service in Japan, and passed away on the 19th of October 2014. |
